Our Natural Dyeing Process
Rooted in Respect and Harmony
Cloth by Medina collaborates with the most respected environmental suppliers all committed and, belief that beauty begins with intention. That’s why every step of our natural dyeing process honors the land, the plants, and the people behind each creation.
Sourced with Purpose
We begin by respectfully collecting plant matter from trees grown organically on our land, nurtured with minimal human intervention, in harmony with nature. Only the most suitable leaves, bark, and botanicals are selectively harvested by hand to ensure the ecosystem remains balanced.
Sun-Dried and Naturally Prepared
After harvesting, the plant matter is carefully spread out under the sun to dry, a process that can take one to two weeks depending on the weather. We allow time and sunlight to gently draw out the essence of each plant.
Hand-Mulched and Boiled with Care
Once dried, the material is hand-processed through a traditional mulching machine, breaking down the fibers to release their natural resins. It is then slowly boiled and stirred in large vats for up to 10 hours—an intentional ritual that extracts the full richness of the color, without the use of chemicals or synthetic additives.
Earth-Conscious Water Treatment
After dyeing, any residual water is purified through an entirely organic treatment system using water hyacinth. This natural filtration process ensures the water is clean and safe, so pure it can be returned to nourish our rice fields.
Set and Sealed with Botanical Mordants
The dyed fabrics are then treated with a natural mordant to help set the color, preserving the beauty of the hues while remaining gentle on the earth. Unlike synthetic dyes, our botanical colors are alive, delicate, unique, and deserving of thoughtful care, much like silk or fine cashmere.

Plant-Derived Colors & Their Origins
-
Red: Derived from the bark of the Secang Tree (Biancaea Sappan), native to Southeast Asia.
-
Indigo: Sourced from the Tarum Tree leaves, known for producing a deep, tranquil blue.
-
Black & Charcoal: From the Ketapang Tree (Red Almond Tree) leaves. Charcoal tones come from a shorter dye cycle; black is achieved through a longer soak.
